A Life Fully Lived
Gavin Schlarmann was born on June 28, 2004, and lived in Highland, Illinois — a small town he loved with his whole heart. From the time he could walk, Gavin had an energy that was impossible to ignore. He was curious, fearless, and deeply loyal to the people he called family.
He grew up playing baseball in the summer, camping with his family in the fall, and spending long evenings around bonfires with friends who became brothers. Gavin had a gift for making everyone around him feel seen and valued — a quality that drew people to him naturally.
He graduated from Highland High School in 2023, where he was known for his infectious laugh, his work ethic on the marching band field, and his willingness to show up for anyone who needed him. Those who knew him best say he never once walked past someone who needed a hand.
What He Loved
Marching Band
Gavin played drums and saxophone for Highland High and continued playing in local Muny bands into adulthood. The work taught him discipline, teamwork, and how to compete with grace.
The Outdoors
Whether it was hunting, fishing, or just sitting by a fire under the stars, Gavin was most at peace when he was outside. He believed nature had a way of putting everything in perspective.
His Community
Highland wasn't just where Gavin lived — it was who he was. He volunteered, showed up to local events, and genuinely cared about the people who called this town home.
His Family
Above everything, Gavin was a family man. He was a devoted son, a protective brother, and the kind of friend who felt like family to everyone lucky enough to know him.
His Connection to the Highland Fire Department
Gavin's admiration for the Highland Fire Department ran deep. As a child, he would wave at the trucks rolling through town and ask his parents what it took to be a firefighter. That wonder never left him.
In his late teens, Gavin began volunteering alongside the department at community events — helping with fundraisers, manning booths at the Highland Firemen's picnic, and showing up whenever the department needed an extra set of hands. The firefighters became his extended family.
He spoke often about the courage it took to run toward danger when everyone else ran away. He had enormous respect for the men and women of the department, and they had equal respect for him. When Gavin passed, Chief Chris Straub said simply: "He was one of ours in every way that mattered."

Forever in Our Hearts
Gavin left this world on August 21, 2025. He was 21 years old. The hole he left in Highland is immeasurable — but so is the love he gave while he was here. This fund is our way of making sure his spirit of service lives on, one donation at a time.
